Jess and I are running away to Europe.. but we will be back in 6 months so don't miss us too much.
As mature adults we are more than capable of budgeting and planning accommodation for the whole trip, however, we decided to wing it and go without much of a plan. Why? we will never know! But with Hamish and Andy as our role models how can we possibly go wrong?
We hope you enjoy seeing the pictures that we post, reading about the crazy adventures we have and snickering at our misfortunes that we will encounter along the way. It is a big step in our lives and a journey that will help us discover the true meaning of being independent. Don't worry about us too much though, I am confident that Jess will be able to take great care of us both.

Day trip to Monaco

We crammed quite a bit into our day on Friday. We ate croissants on the beach, walked through flower markets, ate ice creams, climbed to the top of 'Colline du Château' (the look out from yesterday) again, visited another country for a couple of hours, ate sushi, looked at the lights of Nice at night, and crashed into a heap on our beds (We also showered and brushed our teeth at some point).

Le bakery for le breakfast.
Le feet.
Basilchitto: a wonderfully, confusing, basil flavoured soft drink.
Place Massena. This is the main square of the city.
Apollo is all his glory. Haha I read on Riviera Review that Apollo was removed from the square 30 years ago "due to pressure from The League of Feminine Virtue regarding one of his more impressive attributes that was on display." I take it they were not talking about the crown on his head... He was reinstated to his rightful position in 2011. And now spends the days letting it all hang loose.
Ice-cream!!

Marché aux Fleurs Cours Saleya (the Cours Saleya flower markets): a feast for your eyes and nose!!
Lookout...again.

This afternoon we decided that a trip to Monaco was in order. Monaco is a small country about 45mins on the bus, north east of Nice. According to our New Zealand room mate, it has a population of about 40 000, everyone is rich and they only have to pay 2% on tax. (Don't quote me, these are just rumours I have heard and that I am passing onto you as facts..). The Monte Carlos Casino calls itself at home here, although apparently Monaco-ians are not allowed to play inside and passports are checked at the door for this reason (kiwi man, 2014). Crazy!
Le Casino. Out front sat an array of expensive cars that people seemed more interested in than the actual casino. My favourite was the white Rolls Royce... Mmm very nice car.

We strolled around the shops for a bit and did some window shopping. There is no such thing as Primark in this town, only Louis Vuitton, Amarni, Hermes and others of the like. It was probably the most successful window shop ever, I did not buy one thing.

After deciding we didn't quite have enough to even buy a pair of socks, we headed for the lookout near Palais Princier de Monaco (the Prince's Palace of Monaco).

The Palace.
Eating sushi was an interesting. It was a bit of a struggle to find the sushi with chicken in it for Jess but we got there in the end.
This is the beautiful Nice at night time. Sadly we couldn't climb up to the look out because the gates were closed. It was still beautiful from this point, although this photo doesn't do it any justice.

It was an incredibly busy day! Saturday was even more hectic. We visited Saint Paul de Vence and trained it to Genova. Although I'll try to split up the blogs, so it will be coming soon.

Love you all xoxoxoxoxo

  1. You two should be the size of houses - all we see and hear is you eating yummy fattening food (how jealous I am!!!!). You are so brave - doing all this by yourselves. So glad you are enjoying every minute. Glad to know that Apollo is still looking resplendent and didn't lose any of his bits and pieces when he was removed from the square :) Keep having fun - stay safe - and keep blogging - loving every word and photo. Much love to your both. Grandmaaa xoxo
