This morning started with a rush! We slept in until 8:30 and our free breakfast ends at 9:00. Oh no! Never fear, being the ninjas we are we were dressed and down at the pub within 15 minutes, smothering our plates with fruit,10 pieces of toast and over filling our bowls with cereal. We've got to make the most of this free food! We also pocketed some of the cream cheese sachets (meant for your toast) to dip our crackers in later on. Haha they will never know it wasn't used on toast!! Pretty soon we will be wanted criminals in Bath.. Lucky we are leaving tomorrow!
After the morning's felonies we made our way to the Roman Baths. They are the only naturally occurring thermal springs in Europe. Don't quote me but I'm 98% sure that is accurate. (Actually it might be the UK... We might go with that instead).
Ahhh prett... Wait what? Who is building things? What? Who? Whyyyy?? Ugh it's the off season so everything is being improved for the summer. Apparently they couldn't improve it before we winter holidayers came through. It's ok we get the picture. No matter! We are not easily disappointed so despite the scaffolding we still made the most of our excursion and just cropped the nice construction out of the rest of our photos. The Baths really were a beautiful spectacle! Swirls of steam coming off of the surface and bubbles coming up every so often. It was incredible to look at and the history was so interesting. These baths were the equivalent of a day spa today. Romans used to go and chill out with friends in the nude and discuss pressing matters. Am beginning to think that Romans and Grecians didn't even wear clothes, especially after all those nude statues and now this! Not just the men, but the woman too. It was almost certainly just one big nudist colony back in the day. Haha I'm kidding they probably wore clothes sometimes. Maybe to the markets. Bartering in the nude wouldn't be too much fun.
Anyway, I digress! Photos I know you all want photos!!
One of the soldiers that stands around the top level of the bath. They are all sculptures of important people. One was Julius Ceasar and another, Alexander the Great but I didn't quite catch this guys name.. My apologies.
No, surprisingly enough this is not the night sky it is in fact a smaller spa with many many many coins resting on the bottom. Jess and I threw a penny in each. Jess wished for a large amount of food to appear in front of her. She was sorely disappointed.
Also our favourite thing about this room, aside from the beauty of the spa, was the fact that a hollogram (? Projection?) of a naked roman man kept appearing on the wall. (What did I say? Nudists!!) We were very entertained..for a very long time. It's a bit hard to see but I think he was bending down to pick up his towel at this stage.. After a long period of starring, we reluctantly left the room and took some nice photos outside the main bath
'Stuff the police!' We did it more than once too... It was difficult though because we were waiting for the old guy supervising the baths to take his eyes off of our very suspicious positioning next to the water . Luckily for us another tourist distracted him long enough for us to touch the water for a second. Wew. It was exactly as we expected.. Warm and like a bath.
After being teased and taunted by the warmth of the Baths (Jess has decided it is very rude that they charge us but not let us use the baths properly) we headed over to Bath Abbey, a stunning church in the centre of the town.
We climbed the 200 and something stairs to the very top and took in the amazing view. All the while losing the smaller parts of our body to frostbite the higher we climbed.
We got to sit behind the clock face of the tower.
We were also shown where all the bells live. This bell weighed in at about 1.4 tonne! Haha the tour guide kept saying bowels instead of bells. 'Ringing the bowels' not an expression I've heard before but one that could catch on. I'm just going to 'ring the bowels'.
It was so cold up the top because it was so windy!! Absolutely insane. Maybe I spoke to soon when I said we were getting used to the cold yesterday... Afterwards we made our way back to the hostel with a detour to a little cafe and through the markets. We were pooped and needed a nap!
Also please explain how this is humanly possible!
After our granny nap we headed out again and splurged on dinner at a cute, little Italian restaurant called Carluccio's
It was very romantic..
Candles and everything. I felt obliged to propose to Jess it was so fancy. She already told me she'd turn it down though so I didn't bother. Instead we discussed our life plans and enjoyed the lovely food. We looked like cheapos though because we shared our lasagna and split the bill and couldn't afford to leave a good tip but it was a lovely night despite this as we contemplated life and what we were going to do with it. For now we are going to sleep before thinking too much about anything else.
Until tomorrow!!
Ps: thanks for taking the time to read, hope you are all enjoying it!
